Why SAT Tutoring Must Include Grammar Lessons and Terminology Review

SAT tutoring and ACT tutoring must include more than simply providing test-taking strategies. Although these are important, there are certain terms, concepts, and grammar lessons a student should review with an English tutor. The SAT Writing section and the ACT English section both test knowledge of certain grammar lessons as well as usage rules, idiomatic expressions and word choice that a student should remember. Such grammar lessons include understanding subject-verb agreement, participles, parallelism, and verb tenses. In addition to reviewing these grammar lessons that he or she should have mastered over the years, a student receiving SAT tutoring should be reminded that good writing focuses on clarity and conciseness and not ambiguity and redundancy or wordiness. An English tutor should help a student with this.

For the SAT Critical Reading and ACT Reading sections, students can work with an English tutor in order to review such terms as tone, style, and inference. Those students receiving SAT tutoring for the subject literature test should thoroughly review the literary terms they have studied in English class over the years with an English tutor. Such terms include alliteration, onomatopoeia, protagonist, antagonist, metaphor, simile, iambic pentameter, first-person and third-person point-of-view, theme, blank verse, sonnet, and soliloquy, and many more. A student may recall studying these concepts and terms over the years, but before taking the SAT, ACT, and SAT literature subject test, the student should ensure that he or she understands these terms well enough to apply them to reading passages on the test. An English tutor with significant SAT tutoring experience is the best assistance a student can receive to maximize his or her SAT Writing and Critical Reading and ACT English and Reading scores.
