Just a Couple Tutoring Tips

A student being tutored in any subject should consider several important tips in order to maximize each session.

Be Consistent!

Tutoring can be extremely beneficial if used as a supplementary educational tool over the course of the school year. That is, the tutor is most effective when he or she can help clarify ambiguous or even difficult topics as they arise throughout the course. This method allows the tutor to work with the student in gradually learning concepts as they arise and help prepare for assignments, quizzes, tests, and finals on a weekly basis.

On the other hand, when a tutor is used only right before a major test or final exam, it automatically puts the student at a disadvantage. This is because mastering a large amount of material or even a semester’s worth of work before a final is no easy task even for the best student! This is not to say that an expert tutor cannot help a student in this situation, but it greatly reduces the student’s chances of effectively retaining newly learned concepts needed to excel.

Keep Notes in Class!

It is very important for students to keep thorough class notes over the course of the school year. Some students may dislike keeping notes since they believe they fully understand the material being presented in class on a daily basis. This attitude is not beneficial in the long run because teachers often times give important clues as to the structure of their quizzes and tests as they teach. The student who neglects to take notes will miss out on this information at a later date (such as right before a test) since he or she never wrote it down! It is also good to know how a particular teacher solves different types of problems since he or she may expect you to solve it similarly on a test. Great notes also help the tutor since he or she can see exactly what the teacher covered every day as well as get an idea of how the teacher organizes the course material.

Keep the Tutor Updated!

As a final note, the student should always strive to keep the tutor updated as to his or her progress via e-mail or other forms of communication. This helps the tutor to better prepare for each tutoring session. With this extra preparation, the tutoring session is maximized and the student can learn as much as possible during the time.

In conclusion, when working with a tutor, the student should maintain a regular schedule, keep thorough notes in class, and communicate with him or her on a regular basis. These actions will aid the student in achieving his or her academic goals in the most effective manner possible.
